Curiosity Learning Community Term 3 Overview

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back to another exciting term for learning.

Below is an outline of the curriculum that we will be covering this term.

English

During Term Three, in Reading and Viewing, students will use technology to identify the features of online texts. They will develop criteria for establishing personal preferences for literature and share this with others during book week. The students will read and respond to texts identifying the point of view in a text and suggest alternative points of view. They will compare and evaluate two texts presenting the same ideas and analyse why one is more comprehensible or engaging than the other. The students will continue to use comprehension strategies to build literal and inferred meaning from both fiction and non-fiction texts.

In Writing, students will understand that paragraphs are a key organisational feature of written texts. They will work towards using letter sound relationships and less common letter combinations to spell words. The students will continue to develop editing skills by re-reading for meaning, appropriate structure, grammar, and punctuation.

In Speaking and Listening students will be planning and delivering short presentations providing key details in sequence and using appropriate tone, pace, pitch, and volume. They will discuss literary experiences with others, sharing responses and expressing a point of view.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students will be learning about multiplication and division facts. They will represent and solve problems involving these processes using efficient mental and written strategies. The students will model and represent fractions including half, quarter, third and fifths. The students will count by quarters, halves and thirds and represent fractions on a number line. They will learn how to read time to the minute and use am and pm notation when recording time.

Investigations

During our Investigations this term, students will continue to learn about the lives of the First Australians before European settlers arrived in Australia. They will be focussing on the causes and reasons for the journey of the First Fleet. The students will practise thinking and acting like historians as they are immersed in stories of first contact between Indigenous Australians and European Settlers.

Religion

In Term Three, the students will learn how to access stories in the Bible. They will become familiar with the Genesis Creation story and make connections with the Aboriginal Bunjil creation story. They will be celebrating the feast day of St Lawrence of Brindisi and Grandparents Day. They will learn about Australia’s first and only saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop in the lead up to her feast day.

TCL Auslan

In Auslan, this term, students will be observing signed stories and participating in signed games.  They will be learning to respond to signed stories and use simple signed statements when participating in learning tasks. The students will continue learning about the difference between a sentence in English and a sentence in Auslan. They will be learning to generate different ways to translate verbs by showing the actions.

We look forward to having a wonderful term.
