Discovery Learning Community Term 3 Overview

This term, the Discovery community will be focusing on reading and writing non-fiction texts. The students will be exposed to a variety of non-fiction texts and will identify features of the genre. They will explore how to write non-fiction texts through writing to persuade and inform.

In Reading they will be responding to texts from different cultures. They will recognise short vowels, common long vowels, consonant digraphs and consonant blends.

In Writing, students will revise and edit their own writing to improve meaning, spelling and punctuation. In Speaking and Listening they will identify and manipulate phonemes by adding, deleting and substituting sounds.

At home you can support your child by:

  • exposing them to stories from other cultures and traditions.
  • asking your child their opinion on a topic (e.g: why is chocolate your favourite ice cream flavour?)
  • talking about your culture with your child and sharing family stories.

During Term Three, in Auslan students will draw characters from a signed story and describe what they have drawn and why. When signing, students will sign the times today, yesterday and tomorrow at the start of a sentence. We will explore features of Auslan and how they are important to the Deaf community.

At home, you can support your child by:

  • encourage your child to sign to you
  • ask them to teach you a new sign they learnt that week

In Mathematics in Term Three, we will be learning how to solve subtraction problems using a range of strategies. We will be investigating location and where places are using a range of geographical tools such as a globe and a map. Later in the term we will be investigating shapes both 2D and 3D as well as Australian money.

At home you can support your child by:

  • Showing them money and explore the difference coins and their value
  • Explore the difference between a 2D shape and 3D objects
  • Use technology like Google Earth/Google Maps to show different places and countries.

In Investigations this term we will be exploring Earth and the different locations. We will be looking into the different cultures and traditions. Students will research a country of their choice that will demonstrate their understanding of different cultures and traditions.

At home you can support your child by:

  • sharing experiences from your culture e.g. food, clothes, customs or traditions.
  • encouraging conversations with your child about your culture and traditions.

Throughout Term Three students will explore the Church and our Parish community. We will explore the parts of the mass and the symbols and objects we find around the church. We will investigate the sacraments of Initiation, Forgiveness and Commitment.

At home you can support your child by:

  • talking about times they have been to a church or place of worship.

If you have any queries or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher. We have provided emails below and will endeavour to respond between 8.30am and 3.30pm on school days.
