Discovery Grade Two Learning Community
Term One Overview
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to Term One, 2025.
This term, the Discovery Grade Two Learning Community will be exposed to a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. They will identify the features of each, and they will explore the author’s purpose for each type. The students will also look at sentence structure and what a sentence needs to have. We will also identify the difference between a simple and compound sentence, which they will be encouraged to use in their writing. Through this, we will also explore the use of full stops, capital letters and other punctuation. Students will be encouraged to give short presentations on a given topic. Through this, they will also practise using appropriate tone, volume and pace.
At home, you can support your child by:
- exposing them to fiction and non-fiction texts of different mediums (magazines, newspapers, documentaries, videos).
- discuss features of fiction and non-fiction texts.
- having them explain their opinion on a topic.
In Mathematics this term we will learn to read, model, recognise, write and order numbers to 1000. We will use materials such as base ten blocks to show the place value of these numbers. We will also explore fractions and identify wholes, halves, quarters and eighths of shapes and collections. Later in the term, we will explore two-dimensional shapes and investigate properties of shapes, such as the number of sides and spatial terms such as ‘opposite’, ‘parallel’, ‘curved’ and ‘straight’ to describe the sides. The students will also add and subtract one and two-digit numbers and represent problems using a variety of calculation strategies.
At home, you can support your child by:
- practising counting forward and backwards from different starting points.
- Identifying and reading larger numbers
- skip counting by twos, fives and tens from different starting points.
In Investigations, we will be exploring wellbeing and identifying the verbal and non-verbal ways we express our emotions. The students will consider their emotional responses in different situations, and they will devise a plan to assist themselves when they are overwhelmed. We will also investigate the different ways we communicate. The children will explore digital technologies used in the classroom to communicate our learning. The students will research how communication has changed over time.
At home, you can support your child by:
- discussing the digital technology that is used in their home.
- discussing how communication has changed and the different forms of communication that have been used in the past, e.g. letters sent in the post etc.
This term, the Discovery Grade Two Learning Community will understand the importance of prayer in our lives. We will identify that it is a time for us to talk with God. We will pray formal prayers, and we will create personal prayers of praise, thanksgiving, petition and sorrow. We will then explore the season of Lent and Easter and what this means for our Catholic community. We will read different scriptures from the Bible that will help us understand why Easter is an important part of the church’s calendar.
At home, you can support your child by:
- discussing the Religious events that your child is a part of.
- discuss your own Religious traditions and events around the Easter season.
If you have any queries or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher. We have provided emails below and will endeavour to respond between 8.30am and 3.30pm on school days.
Sport uniform needs to be worn on Mondays & Tuesdays.
