STEM TERM ONE OVERVIEW

Exploration:

In Term One in Exploration, students will explore Earth and Space sciences by understanding Australia’s seasons. Students will work toward learning the names of each season, their order and identify different activities that we participate in for the season.

Discovery:

During In Term One in Discovery Grade 1, students will explore Earth and Space sciences through exploring Australia’s seasons through weather. Students will understand that our year is broken up into four seasons and learn about the different weather that we experience in each season.

In In Term One in Discovery Grade 2, students will explore Earth and Space sciences through developing an understanding of weather. Students will work toward learning about how different weather happens, be able to identify it and describe it. For example, they will learn about the different cloud formations that we see in our sky.

Curiosity:

During In Term One in Curiosity Grade 3, students will explore Earth and Space sciences by developing an understanding of the water cycle. Students will work toward learning about the different types of clouds and how they are made whilst understanding why it rains.

In In Term One in Curiosity Grade 4, students will explore Earth and Space sciences by understanding the water cycle. Students will learn to describe the water cycle, identify its different parts and understand key terminology such as precipitation, evaporation, transpiration and condensation.

Challenge:

During In Term One in Challenge Grade 5, students will explore Earth and Space sciences by developing an understanding of extreme weather. Students will be able to define extreme weather and identify different types of weather that would be classed as extreme. They will also be able to describe what happens during an extreme weather event.

In In Term One in Challenge Grade 6, students will explore Earth and Space science through exploring natural disasters. Students will learn what a natural disaster is and its impact whilst exploring how to stay safe during these events. They will also explore what climate change is and how it has an impact on natural disasters.
