CURIOSITY GRADE THREE TERM ONE OVERVIEW 2025
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It has been wonderful to see how well the Curiosity Grade Three children have settled into their learning community over the past week.
Below is an outline of the curriculum that we will be covering this term.
English
This term, in English, we will be exploring the features of narrative and persuasive texts through our study of Matilda by Roald Dahl. Each week, students will have a specific spelling and grammar focus that will include letter-sound relationships, short vowel sounds, syllables and the correct use of ‘a’ and ‘an’ when reading and writing. As a part of Speaking and Listening, students will continue to develop the skills of active listening and appropriate use of language and tone when communicating in different contexts.
At home, you can support your child by:
- asking your child to summarise the important parts of a text after reading.
- listening to your child read aloud and ensuring they are not reading too fast or too slow, and using relevant expressions.
- encourage your child to ask questions about things in the world that they don’t understand.
Mathematics
In Term One, the students will be looking at the importance of place value. They will be learning how to recognise, write, represent and order six-digit numbers. Students will then explore addition and subtraction strategies, including addition facts to 20, partitioning and inverse relationships. Students will then investigate the relationship between formal units of time and how time is used to measure and compare the duration of events or calculate the time between them.
At home, you can support your child by:
- asking your child to add and subtract amounts of money, including calculating change, when shopping
- reading analogue clock times and discussing at what time family events happen and how long they go for.
Investigations
Working together, students will develop a set of expectations that will keep us all safe and happy as part of the Curiosity Learning community and the wider Saint Lawrence of Brindisi community. Students will be working towards strengthening their social and emotional capabilities. They will create a 5 fingers of trust resource to assist them with a list of trusted adults that they can turn to when needed.
At home, you can support your child by:
- discussing trusted adults that they can turn to for support at school and home.
- asking about and sharing feelings around friendships and day-to-day events at school.
Religion
In Term One, students will be exploring Prayer. Each classroom will create a classroom prayer and revisit common prayers such as The Our Father, The Hail Mary and The Glory Be. We will also discuss reasons why people pray and why this is important for people of faith. Students will participate in regular prayer services through which they will reflect on the word of God and what that means to them. Towards the end of the term, students will explore Lent, the time of waiting before Easter, and the events of Holy Week.
At home, you can support your child by:
- discussing the Religious events that your child is a part of.
- discuss your religious traditions and events around the Easter season.
TCL Auslan
In Term One, the students will participate in a deaf awareness session. We will be revisiting the alphabet, numbers and greetings with a focus on using greeting signs with the correct handshape to form familiar greetings.
