Curiosity Grade Four Learning Community Term One Overview
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to Term One 2025,
This term, the Curiosity (Grade Four) Community will be focused on reading and writing persuasive and narrative texts. We will be using ‘Fox’ by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks and ‘Leo and Ralph’ by Peter Carnavas. The students will be exploring the writing process through planning and drafting persuasive and narrative pieces. When exploring ‘Fox’ we will build our skills in using different types of sentences, expanding sentences and learning how to take notes. With ‘Leo and Ralph’ we will develop our skills in using similes to describe characters and the structure and purpose of a paragraph in writing.
At home, you can support your child by:
- encouraging them to participate in nightly reading, either independently or with siblings and parents.
- asking your child to summarise the important parts of a text.
- listening to your child read aloud and ensure they are not reading too fast or too slow, and using relevant expressions.
- encourage your child to ask questions about things in the world that they don’t understand.
In Mathematics this term we will be learning how to solve unknown values using addition and subtraction and understanding the importance and meaning of the equal sign. Students will be counting using fractions and mixed numbers while locating and representing these fractions on a number line. Later in the term, students will explore multiplication and division algorithms and will apply these skills to solve word problems. Students will be supported in solving problems involving length of time using ‘am’ and ‘pm’ notation.
At home, you can support your child by:
- practising counting from different starting points and by different multiples (Eg. 2, 3, 4, 5, 10).
~ For example, starting at 7, counting by 2’s. “7, 9, 11, 13…”
- identify 10 more or 10 less of a given number.
- prompting discussions about numbers you see in the world.
In Investigations this term, students will be exploring our personal safety and developing an understanding of how rules contribute to keeping us safe. Later in the term, the students will be investigating the impact that bushfires have on our world and how the environment changes over time.
At home, you can support your child by:
- discussing with your child what makes them feel safe.
- encourage your child to explain how our world changes over time and what impact these changes have on the environment.
This term, the Curiosity Community will understand the importance of prayer in our lives. We will identify that it is a time for us to talk with God and that we can pray to give thanks, ask for support or to look after someone. We will then explore the season of Lent and what this means for our Catholic Community. We will read different Bible scriptures that will help us to understand why Easter is an important part of the Church calendar.
At home, you can support your child by:
- discussing the Religious events that your child is a part of.
- discuss your own Religious traditions and events around the Easter season.
This term during Auslan the Curiosity students will learn how to communicate with one or multiple people formally or informally to suit the audience. They will incorporate handshapes with a particular movement and understand the importance of facial expressions to show how much they like or dislike something.
At home, you can support your child by:
- asking them to show you new signs learnt
- discussing why learning Auslan is an important skill to learn and how this language can connect people together.
