Challenge Term One 2025 Learning Overview
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back to another year brimming with engaging learning experiences in Challenge Grade Five! We are thrilled to be back and look forward to the learning opportunities that await us this term.
Investigations
This Term, we will be learning about who we are as learners and the dispositions of good learners, as part of settling into our new classrooms. Additionally, the students will be exploring the concept of leadership and investigating what it means to be a leader and how they can be leaders at school, at home and within their community.
English
During Term One, the students will continue to be engaged with a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts, such as War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. Their main focus is to develop their comprehension skills to understand the texts we read. They will also be expanding their vocabulary by looking at definitions, synonyms and antonyms of specific words from texts read. They will continue to develop their writing skills to engage the reader by using appropriate conjunctions when writing a narrative or a persuasive text. The students will have opportunities to present their learning to an audience, focusing on the use of appropriate eye contact, appropriate tone, and fluency.
Mathematics
In Term One for Mathematics, the students will be learning to read and interpret dot plots, develop their understanding of ‘products’ in multiplication and division, create simple rules that follow a repeating pattern and measure the perimeter and area of regular and irregular shapes.
Religious Education
During Term One in Religious Education, the students will be learning about prayer. They will be reinforcing their knowledge of traditional Catholic prayers, such as the Our Father and Hail Mary, as well as learning about The Nicene Creed. Later in the Term, the students will be learning about Lent and exploring related Scripture passages to understand the significance of events that we celebrate during Lent.
Reading Diaries
It is an expectation that all students at St Lawrence read for 20 minutes every school night. Students will use their reading diary to record details (Title of the book, pages read and parent signature) on the day they have read at home. Your child’s teachers will collect the student diaries every week, to check and ensure they have been reading every day.
Challenge Camp – Sovereign Hill Camp, March 5-7 2025
The Year 5 and Year 6 students will be going to camp at Sovereign Hill, from Wednesday, 5th March 2025 to Friday, March 7 2025. All students are expected to come and participate in camp as it is part of their educational program. Camp permission forms have been sent out and are expected to be returned, completed and signed, by Wednesday, February 12 2025. We will be providing more information regarding what students need to bring in and expect, in the coming weeks.
