Discovery Learning Community Term 2 Overview
Term 2 Discovery Learning Community Overview
This term the Discovery community will be focused on reading and writing fiction texts. The students will be exposed to a variety of Fiction texts and will identify features of the genre. They will explore how to write Fiction texts through writing to entertain. Students will be making predictions prior to reading a text and will modify predictions as we read the text. In Writing they will recognise simple word families (e.g., play, plays, played, playing). They will also begin to identify digraphs and blends in words. Students will be encouraged to give short presentations on a topic of choice. Through this they will also practise using appropriate tone, volume and pace.
At home you can support your child by:
- exposing them to fiction texts of different forms of stories (fairy tales, superheroes, nursery rhymes etc).
- discuss features of fiction texts.
- Make a prediction about a story prior to reading it.
During Term Two, students will continue to develop their ability to ask questions and different ways we can answer them. We will begin to explore how to have a conversation using Auslan. Students will be able to understand that they are able to point in order to identify where people need to move to.
At home you can support your child by:
- encourage your child to sign to you
- Ask them to teach you a new sign they learnt that week
In Mathematics in Term Two, we will be learning how to tell time both digitally and with an analogue clock. We will explore what this means and use language associated with time e.g.; ‘past’ ‘to’. We will also look at the different seasons and how to use a calendar. Later in the term we will explore a range of addition and subtraction strategies and the link between them. Students will use a range of strategies to help them solve both addition and subtraction problems.
At home, you can support your child by:
- Encouraging your child to read the time to you
- Supporting your child with using both an analogue and digital clock
- Helping your child with counting and counting on from a given number
In Investigations this term, we will be exploring the performing arts and how we can use the performing arts to communicate ideas. Students will be exploring music we can make with our bodies and voices. They will explore dance and how they can move their bodies safely to music. Students will also communicate ideas through drama and learn to use their voice and body movements.
Later in the term we will be learning about earth science and how we can observe changes in our environment over the course of days, months and years. We will investigate the effects this may have on other parts of the environment.
At home, you can support your child by:
- Share experiences from your culture e.g. music, dance performances.
- Helping your child explore the body space and movement
- Encourage student to identify changes they can see around them
Throughout Term Two, the students will be exploring what God’s creation is. We will be reading scriptures from the bible to assist them with understanding why God created things in a certain order. Students will explore what it means to be a steward of God’s creation and how our relationship with God is impacted by the choices we make.
At home you can support your child by:
- Discuss with your child what God created and why it is important to protect our world
- Help your child with what is means to be a steward of God’s creation and what we can do to help look after God’s creation
